The Weight of a Life
Well-Lived
We often think of the soul as something light, ethereal, and intangible. But what if its true substance, its very weight, is earned not through quiet contemplation, but through bold action?

We often think of the soul as something light, ethereal, and intangible. But what if its true substance, its very weight, is earned not through quiet contemplation, but through bold action?
I came across a this quote from Bert Hellinger: “The specific weight of the soul is equal to the sum of what has been dared.”
Let’s sit with that for a moment.
This suggests that the depth, value, and essence of who we are—our soul—is not predetermined. It is not a fixed thing we are born with. It is built. It is forged.
And the currency of its creation is daring.
Daring to try, even when you’re terrified of failure.
Daring to love, even when you risk heartbreak.
Daring to speak your truth, even when your voice shakes.
Daring to change direction, even when the path is unknown.
Daring to be vulnerable, to be seen, to be authentically you.
Every risk taken, every leap of faith, every moment you choose courage over comfort—each of these acts adds mass. They add gravity. They give your soul substance and heft.
A life played safe might be comfortable, but it is light. A life of daring—of facing challenges, embracing vulnerability, and pursuing dreams—accumulates weight. It becomes significant. It leaves an imprint on the world and on the hearts of others.
So, what is the weight of your soul? What is the sum of what you have dared?
It’s never too late to add to that sum. What will you dare to do today?
