The Shot I Didn’t Take
The hardest shot I ever missed… I never took it.
I was maybe 24. In a smoky bar in Manila. Playing for rent money.
A stranger came up, put down a wad of cash, and said:
“Double or nothing. Nine-ball. One game.”
I was tempted. Real tempted.
But something inside me — not fear, something deeper — said no.
So I shook his hand and walked away.
That night, I ate rice and sardines.
A week later, I heard he was part of a gambling ring — they fixed games. Players who beat him sometimes didn’t walk out.
Sometimes, the best win? Is not playing the game.
Moral: At our age, fellas… we don’t need to prove anything.
Just know when to chalk the cue — and when to walk.
