Stability is a story we tell ourselves. What's the story under the story?

Do you ever feel like you're playing a role in your own life?
Not on purpose. Not because you’re fake. But because somewhere along the way, you settled into a version of yourself that feels safe. Predictable. Needed.
Like Alex at work — known as the go-to expert for years. He takes pride in it. But he also ignores the dull ache in his shoulders, the little spark of curiosity when he hears about a new way of doing things, and the helpful suggestions from younger colleagues that sound more like criticism to his ears.
Or Maria at home — the mom who’s always holding it all together. She feels needed, but also deeply tired. She misses being thanked, but feels guilty when her kids don’t need her like they used to. She cooks the meals, keeps the calendar, and wonders where she went in the middle of it all.
We do this to keep our world steady. But in doing so, we often delete, distort, and generalize our real experience:
We DELETE our small longings — the urge to try something new, the quiet wish for help, the part of us that’s bored or lonely or hungry for change.
We DISTORT other people’s growth — seeing a teen’s independence as rejection, a colleague’s new idea as a threat, a partner’s different approach as them not caring.
We GENERALIZE — telling ourselves “This is just how I am,” “This is just how work is,” “This is just what family requires.”
But what if the very things we’re ignoring — the tension, the flicker of curiosity, the changes in the people around us — are not interruptions to our peace… but invitations to a deeper kind of life?
One where we’re not just playing a part, but growing into who we’re still becoming.
Where our roles can soften, and our relationships can breathe.
Where home and work aren’t stages we’re stuck on, but spaces we can help shape.
Maybe today, just notice.
What have you been shrugging off in your body?
What have you been shushing in your mind?
What change in someone else have you been resisting?
That might be where your life is trying to widen.
Where you get to remember: You’re not just who you’ve been.
You’re also who you’re becoming.
