Did you know your eye movements help your brain access information?

One of the most intriguing insights from Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is that our eye movements aren’t random—they actually help us retrieve memories, process thoughts, and recall information.
Next time someone asks you a question, pay attention: your eyes will naturally dart to the side, upward, or downward. To an NLP practitioner, these movements reveal whether you’re visualizing an image, replaying a sound, or accessing a feeling related to what you’re thinking about.

This insight hit home in 2020, during the height of the COVID pandemic, when students were taking classes and exams online. Some schools used monitoring software that restricted natural eye movement during tests—a practice that, intentionally or not, may have added unnecessary cognitive strain.

One child shared that he felt exhausted after every test. When asked why, he explained that his school required eye-tracking software during exams. The program would flag any glance away from the screen as “cheating,” forcing students to stare rigidly ahead.

The thing is, our brains rely on eye movement to access information efficiently. Our brains need to move our eyes to access different types of memories—like glancing sideways to recall a conversation or upward to picture an image. By suppressing this natural process, the software may be preventing cheating, but it was also making exams unnecessarily draining.

After raising concerns, the school kindly removed the requirement. The result? Less fatigue, better focus, and a more natural way of thinking under pressure.

So the next time you’re solving a problem or searching for an answer—let your eyes move! Your brain will thank you.

Have you ever noticed where your eyes go when you think? What comes up for you internally when your eyes go to a certain spot?
