People are never their behaviors. Behind every action is human longing to be seen, to connect, to loved.

You know how we often see a person’s actions and make a quick story about them in our heads?

I was reminded of a powerful truth about this recently.
At a recent workshop in Tanay, a participant shared how he loves to tease his co-workers. Loves it! Absolutely enjoys doing it! It was just “how he is.”

And when we got curious and looked behind the behavior, a childhood memory surfaced. For him, teasing was the very thing that made his mother laugh and finally give him her attention.

It struck me, once again, that people are never their behaviors. We are all complex beings, shaped by moments and longings we often forget. That teasing wasn’t about annoyance; it was a young boy’s brilliant, heartfelt strategy for connection.

What if we approached the people in our lives with this kind of curiosity? What intention for love, safety, or connection might be hiding behind a behavior we find difficult?
With warmth,

Yi

What is Stories from The Field?

In workshops and quiet sessions, I am consistently gifted with moments of raw, human truth. Stories from the Field is my way of sharing these glimpses with you.

Each story is a real moment from my work—a shared laugh, a silent tear, a sudden insight, a healed wound. While names and details are always changed to protect privacy, the heart of the experience remains intact.

This series is an invitation to explore the vast and beautiful landscape of our shared humanity. It’s about the ways we love, protect, grow, and connect. My hope is that in reading these stories, you see a part of your own experience reflected back at you, and feel a little more connected and understood with this journey we are all on.
