A Better Way to Think About Change

Change can feel like pushing against something deep within ourselves. We try new habits or rearrange our lives, but old patterns remain.
Change can feel like pushing against something deep within ourselves. We try new habits or rearrange our lives, but old patterns remain.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) offers a useful perspective called the “Logical Levels of Change.” It’s a way of seeing ourselves as a whole system, with change happening across different layers:

  • Environment: Our surroundings—the places we go and the people we are with.
  • Behavior: What we actually do—our actions and reactions.
  • Capabilities: What we can do—the skills and strategies we’ve learned.
  • Beliefs: What we hold to be true—the assumptions that give us permission or hold us back.
  • Identity: Who we feel we are—our sense of self and our role in the world.
Change at a deeper level, like a belief, naturally influences everything above it. But the reverse isn’t always true. Trying to change a behavior, like exercising, can fail if a quiet belief contradicts it, like “I’m just not someone who enjoys that.”

Imagine someone working far from home to support their family.
They might focus on the outer levels: finding a better job (Environment), working longer hours (Behavior), or learning a new skill (Capabilities).

But if their Beliefs work against them—thinking “I don’t deserve success” or “Real opportunity is for others”—their progress can stall, no matter how hard they try.

The most meaningful change often begins with who we believe we are. If this person sees himself only as “the provider,” his options might feel limited. But if he begins to see himself as a “resourceful leader” or a “creative problem-solver,” his perspective shifts.

This new sense of self changes what he believes is possible. It opens him up to new skills, which leads to different actions, and ultimately, guides him to a more supportive environment. Lasting change starts from the inside and grows outward.

This model doesn’t offer a quick fix, but a lens for understanding where we might focus our energy to make a change that lasts.
